Stamford Youth Tennis Academy expands free lessons and academic support for 2015

Stamford, CT - The Stamford Youth Tennis Academy (SYTA) will hold a Wine- Tasting Fundraiser hosted by Stamford Wine and Liquor on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Avenue, Stamford. The evening will include passed hors d’oeuvres, music and a silent auction. Proceeds from tickets sales will fund free tennis instruction, racquets, court time and homework support for underserved Stamford middle school students.
“Put a racquet in a child’s hand, help them with homework and who knows what can happen,” says SYTA Executive Director Linda Cremin. In fact, good things have already happened. This year, approximately 20 students showed up each week to learn the game and get tutoring support. Cremin and SYTA organizers say their goal for the coming year is to nearly double the number of students who participate. “Ideally, we’d like to have a base of 40 students who play consistently 3 times a week, get homework help and learn life skills. We can make a real difference with that!”
The tennis program of the 100 Black Men of Stamford began in 1995. For 19 years, Stamford children received free lessons twice a week during the month of July at Cove Island Park. The Friends of SYTA began in 2013 and is composed of leaders from The 100 Black Men of Stamford as well as the local tennis community and the City. The Friends helped the program become year-round. As a result, instruction is now provided three times a week from April to October at Cummings Park, twice a week at the SoundWaters summer camp at Cove Island Park and twice a week all winter at the Shippan Racquet Club. SYTA continues its partnership with The 100 Black Men of Stamford and has recently become a
501(c) (3) organization.
*Tennis Instruction will take place this coming Sunday, January 4 from 11:30 – 12:30 p.m. at the Shippan Racquet Club, 45 Harbor Drive, Stamford.
