A little after midnight, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy told supporters at his election night headquarters in Hartford that he expects victory after the final tally of the votes.

"We don't have the final numbers, but we know what the big numbers are and we are going to win this thing," said Malloy.

Soon after, in Greenwich, challenger Tom Foley felt it's too early to concede the race although he did not seem to believe that his campaign has won.

Around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, with 90 percent of the votes in, Malloy was shown ahead 51-48 percent.

Democrats also retained control in both the state House and Senate.

In other local election news, all five incumbent U.S. Representatives were sent back to Washington for another two-year term.

Nationally, Tuesday night's election was a major blow to Democrats who have now lost control of the U.S. Senate. while Republicans have also won numerous gubernatorial races around the country.

Republicans retained the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
