Last year, more than 5,000 people attended this fun-filled event. Serving as this year’s emcees are comedian Jane Condon from the hit TV show, "Last Comic Standing;" radio personality Matt Zako from 95.9 FOX FM radio; and eight-time Emmy winner Bill Evans, senior meteorologist for WABC's Eyewitness News. "Puttin’ On the Dog is a wonderful event for the whole family," says Allyson Halm, president of Adopt-A-Dog and chair of Puttin’ On the Dog. "We welcome all animals lovers in the community to join us in having the most fun anyone can have with a dog and cat companion." Puttin’ On the Dog features a dog show with 17 classes of entries including Biggest Lap Dog, K-9 Krooners, A Pooch Who Can Smooch, Homely Hounds, Just Like You and Clever K-9 Tricks. Participants can enter their dogs in any category, and all class entrants receive an Honorable Mention ribbon. Judges include Bill Evans; Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut State Attorney General; Amy Newmark, publisher of Chicken Soup for the Soul; Barbara Ricci, publisher of The Westchester News; Rebecca Surran and Heather Kovar, News 12 Connecticut anchors; Bill Berloni, author and trainer of animal actors for movies, theater and television; Rick Arruzza, the author of a series of children's books based on Sparky, a dog he rescued through Adopt-a-Dog; and others. The public can spend the entire day watching the dog show and parade, attending a silent auction, watching pet CPR and first aid demonstrations, tasting an array of food, visiting vendor booths and pet adoption tents, purchasing clothing and other items, and trying their luck at raffles. A special Children's Corner will offer face painting, clowns and a fire truck. An Authors' Alley will include book sales and signings by Arruzza; Berloni; 11-year old Ally Del Monte, who penned a book on puppy mill awareness titled Lilly's Story; Barbara Stretton, author of the Tori Trotter cat detective mystery series; and Amy Newmark, publisher and co-author of the newly-released books Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Dog and Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Cat. Proceeds from book sales will go directly to Adopt-A-Dog. Most importantly, several dogs and cats currently available for adoption will be on hand to meet with prospective adoptive families. In 2008, two-thirds of the animals presented at Puttin’ On the Dog found loving homes. "Our dogs and cats teach us so much about how to live our lives - sometimes we just have to stop and listen," says Newmark, who is donating the Chicken Soup books to anyone who adopts a dog or cat at the event. All day admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors and children over 5, free for children 5 or younger.
