The hospital will host a special workshop on family weight-loss surgery on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 5:15 p.m. in Saint Raphael’s Cronin Auditorium, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven. Registration is required: call 203.789.6237 or register online at www.srhs.org/weightlossseminars. Studies have shown that weight-loss surgery patients lose 30 to 40 percent more weight if they get surgery with a family member. These patients also show twice the improvement in obesity-related health problems. Saint Raphael’s weight-loss surgery program, among the most experienced in the state with more than 4,000 total procedures, has seen excellent results when couples and family members get surgery together. “A spouse or other family member can provide crucial emotional support before, during and after surgery to ensure the best possible results,” said Dr. Geoffrey S. Nadzam, director of Bariatric (weight-loss) Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. “In many cases, couples also make major lifestyle changes together like new diet and exercise routines and get healthier as a family unit.” Weight-loss surgery is becoming a more popular option for weight loss as outcomes improve. Medicare recognizes the importance of weight-loss surgery for those with medical problems related to obesity and surgery is increasingly recognized as an effective way to manage and even cure chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnea. Saint Raphael’s surgeons have performed weight loss surgery since 1993 on over 4,000 patients. The Saint Raphael’s Center for Weight-Loss Surgery is a nationally-recognized Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence – one of only a handful in Connecticut chosen by Medicare for its beneficiaries.
