Local doctor receives international recognition for treatment of bladder control problems

Dr. Scott Serels
Physicians throughout the world are learning about innovative treatments for urinary incontinence from a local expert, Dr. Scott Serels of Westport, chief of urogynecology at Norwalk Hospital and director of the Bladder Control Center of Norwalk. Dr. Serels, a urologist with Urology Associates of Norwalk, has pioneered leading innovations in bladder control treatment and has educated urologists and urogynecologists in the United States and abroad.

"He is sought out by international associations to present at their annual scientific meetings on his success with single incision sling techniques as well as single incision prolapse procedures. This is a prestigious honor for both Dr. Serels and Norwalk Hospital," said Dr. Peter Dodds, chairman of surgery at Norwalk Hospital.

Within the last several months, Dr. Serels has presented at the International Conference Society 2009 Scientific Program, Societe International d' Urologie 2009, and the American Association of Gynecologic Surgeons. He also presented on the treatment of patients with severe over-active bladders at the western section of the American Urological Association annual meeting.

Dr. Serels has given numerous courses for physicians throughout the world on treatment for pelvic prolapse and incontinence.

Recently, he co-authored an article entitled, "Treatment with solifenacin increases warning time and improves symptoms of overactive bladder: Results from VENUS, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial," published in Urology 2009;73 (1):14-18

He also co-authored an article submitted for publication on "Solifenacin treatment in patients with overactive bladder improves patient-reported outcomes in the VESIcare efficacy and safety in patients with urgency study (VENUS)."

Dr. Serels was the first author to publish an article regarding prolapse surgery in Urology Times, appearing in June 2009.

In addition to these recent articles, Dr. Serels has published in numerous other scientific journals.

A member of the American Urological Association and the American Association of Clinical Urologists, Dr. Serels has completed extensive research in surgical therapies for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse as well as overactive bladders in men and in women.

Dr. Serels holds a B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Brandeis University, Waltham, MA, and an M.D. degree from New York University Medical School, New York, NY. His training includes a two-year surgical residency and four-year urologic residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, New York. In addition, he completed specialty training in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, as well as in female urology with Drs. Shlomo Raz and Gary Leach in Los Angeles.

Dr. Serels served as a Clinical Associate specializing in female urology, urodynamics and neurourology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is a member of the American Urological Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, The Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology.
