Stamford, CT - Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that all SPS alternative education programs (RISE, LEAP and the new SPS middle school program) will be located at 68 Southfield Avenue for the 2019-2020 school year. Additionally, instead of ARTS, the collective name for all SPS alternative education programs will be SPS Anchor.
“By bringing our alternative programs together in this one location, we can best meet the needs of our students, support our families and efficiently utilize facilities and staff,” said Dr. Tamu Lucero, SPS Superintendent. “We believe these programs serve to hold steady, like an anchor, those students who may need a non- traditional learning environment. We are extremely fortunate to have found this ideal space, albeit temporary, to serve all of our SPS Anchor students this year.”
In mid-July, the district was notified that Domus would no longer run the Trailblazers program. SPS immediately began planning for its alternative middle school program and to establish its location. In late July, the Stamford Asset Management Group (SAMG) determined that the former Trailblazers location, at 83 Lockwood Avenue, was not suitable for immediate occupancy. The work necessary could not be completed prior to the beginning of the school year, nor could it be completed safely while the building was occupied. At the same time, the district was looking for a new location for its RISE program, which has been located in the old Westhill Agricultural building that is also in need of significant improvements.
“This is an exciting time for SPS Alternative Education programming. I can already feel the new energy and see the heightened levels of pride as we ready to occupy our new home and come together to best address the needs of SPS Anchor at Harbor Landing students,” said Dr. Laura Greene, SPS Coordinator of Alternative Education. “I am proud to be part of the team that worked hard to bring this vision to reality.”
Until a permanent solution is identified for all SPS Anchor programs, the SAMG is leasing 15,000 square feet of former daycare center space in Harbor Landing. The location will be referred to as SPS Anchor at Harbor Landing. The required modifications to the space are minimal and are already underway. The space will be ready for SPS Anchor students by Thursday, August 29, 2019. All costs associated with the lease will be borne by the SAMG.
During coming months, the SAMG will continue to assess the long-term needs of the district as well as its facilities to identify permanent space for all programs.
