Fernandez has been a dominant fixture in the tennis world since turning pro in 1983. During her 14-year career Fernandez won seventeen Grand Slam doubles crowns, as well as two Olympic Gold Medals. Fernandez was Puerto Rico’s first professional female athlete and coach of the year in Puerto Rico in 2003. In 2010 Fernandez was named Puerto Rican Athlete of the Century. Fernandez was ranked first or second in the world from April 1991, up to the time of her retirement in 1997. Fernandez is also a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Since retirement, Fernandez has coached the Puerto Rican National Team, along with serving as head coach at the University of South Florida in Tampa. In addition to her tennis expertise, Fernandez is also a talented entrepreneur and businesswoman. She holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Rollins College and in 2009, she developed and launched Baby Goes Pro, a company that provides young children and their parents with technically correct, fun and instructional products that teach the fundamentals of sports, encourages kids to play and inspires them to move. As the Director of Tennis, Fernandez will oversee all day-to-day tennis operations at Chelsea Piers, which includes development and oversight of all adult and junior programming and hiring, training and managing a dynamic pro staff. Fernandez will also offer specialty “Gigi” clinics, camps and private lessons for adults and juniors, providing Fairfield County residents with an unbelievable opportunity to learn from one the sport’s best. “I am extremely honored and excited to join the team at CPCT and to be an integral part of growing the tennis community in Fairfield County,” commented Fernandez. “CPCT provides a unique opportunity for me as well as other families who seek to find a multi sport facility that focuses on family activities as well as individual competitive sports. I look forward to sharing my tennis knowledge and enthusiasm for the great game of tennis with members and non-members of CPCT.”
