What started as firefighters from the Stamford Fire & Rescue Department (SFRD) stocking the toy closet at Pediatrics Ward at Stamford Hospital so kids forced to be away from home at Christmas had something to look forward to, has grown by leaps and bounds.

This year members of the Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association will collect, wrap and deliver an estimated 1,000 toys this Christmas season. The recipients will be children whose families utilize the services of The Community Action Agency (CTE), the Franklin Street Shelter and patients at the Pediatrics Ward in Stamford Hospital.

“This is a remarkable effort by SFRD members and the community,” said Firefighter Donald Lowndes, the toy drive’s organizer. “It’s especially hard at this time of year for disadvantaged children and those who are hospitalized and away from home. Hopefully our firefighters can bring at least a little bit of holiday cheer to these children and families.”

Anyone wishing to participate in the toy drive can drop off a new and unwrapped toy at any SFRD firehouse between 8 am and 10 pm daily.
