Norwalk, CT - September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). The event, now in its fifteenth year, is a nationwide, month-long effort encouraging households, businesses, and communities to prepare and plan for emergencies.

Throughout the month, residents and business owners are encouraged to take time to develop a plan and supply kit for emergencies, learn lifesaving skills, such as CPR and first aid. Check your insurance policies and coverage for the hazards you may face, such as flood, fire, and weather events and make sure all members of your family, can stay informed and in touch during emergencies.

The devastating hurricanes of 2017, on-going wildfires, tornadoes and heat waves, remind the nation of the importance of preparing for disasters. Often, our residents we will be the first ones in our communities to take action after a disaster strikes and before first responders arrive, so it is important to prepare in advance to help yourself and your community.

The City of Norwalk provides safety tips and resources on its website www.norwalkct.org. On September 29, Norwalk Fire, DPW, Police, Health and EMS are hosting an open house and touch a truck from 10-1 at 15 South Smith Street. Departments will have free safety tips and resources to help you stay safe.

Residents are also encouraged to sign up to receive emergency notifications from the City Emergency Alert System (Code Red). Sign up on the City's website by clicking on the 'How do I sign up for Emergency Alerts" on the bottom of the page. The Health Department encourages residents to visit www.dispenseassist.net or the Dispense Assist app and familiarize themselves with this online screening tool that could be used in some public health emergencies.

The City of Norwalk encourages our community to be better prepared and invites community members to join us in this effort. For more information about the Ready Campaign and National Preparedness Month, visit www.ready.gov.
