Dr. Henkind, who has practiced with Stamford Pediatric Associates since 1994, supports adoptive families in many different ways. In addition to consulting with local individuals and families who are considering adoption, she educates her colleagues about the special challenges of treating children who have been adopted internationally. Through lectures and consultations, she advises parents on the medical and developmental differences that might be seen in these children. While Dr. Henkind’s professional advice is valuable, she provides a special perspective as an adoptive parent herself. She and her husband have two children who were adopted through FCA. She often consults with FCA social workers whose client families are struggling with issues related to their children’s health, personal development, and social adjustment. Dr. Henkind was nominated for the volunteer award by Mary Kate Schneider, FCA’s Director of Adoption, and Mary Ellen Hass, Senior VP at the Agency. They noted, “It is difficult to fully capture how valuable Dr. Henkind’s volunteerism has been to FCA and to the adoption community in Stamford and beyond. We are incredibly grateful to have a volunteer…who is so committed to assisting us in the work we do to find permanent families for children.” Dr. Henkind views her volunteer service as a way of “giving back” to FCA. As she explained, “Without FCA, Joe and I would not have our family. The volunteering I do for FCA is truly my honor to thank the agency for filling the dreams of so many childless families.” Family & Children’s Agency (FCA) is a non-profit family service organization meeting the needs of more than 10,000 individuals – including children, adults, and families – throughout Fairfield County. Skilled professionals serve clients in seven impact areas: youth development, family strengthening, foster care, adoption, behavioral health, homeless services, and services for seniors. For every dollar donated to FCA, 89 cents goes directly to help clients in these program areas.
