New Special Collections Exhibition "Egyptomania" the Western Fascination with Egypt" Opens at Pequot Library

Southport, CT – Egyptomania: The Western Fascination with Egypt exhibition opens with a reception on November 1, 2018 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The exhibition is on view November 1, 2018-January 27, 2019 during regular library hours. Enjoy an opening reception with a gallery tour by archeologist Megan Paqua at 7:00 p.m. Discover how Egypt has captivated the Western imagination from the 19th century until today. From Napoleon’s conquest of Africa to the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in the 1920s, Egyptomania swept America and Europe and came to symbolize the exotic, romantic, and mysterious. Featuring materials from Pequot Library’s Special Collections of rare books, manuscripts, and archives, including late-19th-century photographs of Egypt and archeological surveys, this exhibition explores the far-reaching influence of Egypt on Western culture. Light hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served at the reception, which is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Related programming during the exhibition dates include a kickoff to the exhibition on Friday, October 26 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Join Pequot staff in the new Dillon Reading Room for Fantastic Finds: Egyptomania Exhibition Preview and take an up-close look at the materials chosen to be on display in the exhibition and learn how they have influenced Western culture.

Experience the Off the Wall Book Club on Wednesday, November 14 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. with Chief Librarian Christine Catallo and gain a different perspective on our current, exciting exhibition. Dive deeper into the theme and subject on display by reading and discussing The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al-Aswanyand then receiving a tour of the exhibition. The novel examines the varied, myriad lives of the tenants living in the eponymous building in downtown Cairo. This monthly book club is free and open to the public, with registration required at

Movie lovers will enjoy the Pequot Presents film series by discovering how Egyptomania has influenced modern film with three classic movies. Beginning with The Mummy (1932, 1hr 14min) on Wednesday, November 28 at 3:00 p.m., Pequot Presents films are matinée screenings with general seating. No reservations are required. They are free and open to the public. Egyptomania movies continue on December 5 with Antony and Cleopatra (1972, 2hr 40min) and on with December 12 The Yacoubian Building (2006, 2h 52m).
