“As we mark World AIDS Day, we must remember that there is still much work to be done - not only to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, but to find a cure for this devastating disease that has taken the lives of millions.” Dodd was a lead sponsor of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, which was reauthorized by the Senate in October. The CARE Act provides funding to cities, states and organizations to provide direct assistance to individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS, including primary care, medications, support services, dental care, medical transportation, and many other services. The State of Connecticut and the cities of Hartford and New Haven received millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS care through the reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act. As a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Dodd has also been a leader in working to confront HIV/AIDS worldwide. In 2008, he helped pass landmark reauthorization of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program, which included language that he authored to dramatically reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Since 1988, World AIDS Day—an international day to raise awareness about HIV AND AIDS—has been commemorated each year on December 1. Dodd is a senior member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and Chairman of its Subcommittee on Children and Families. © Copyright by ConnecticutPlus.com.
