Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) announced today that more than $1 million in grant funds have been awarded to agencies in Hartford and Bridgeport for at-risk youth programs. The Recovery Act funds were awarded to Community Renewal Team, Inc. and Co-Opportunity, Inc. in Hartford and The WorkPlace, Inc. in Bridgeport, from the U.S. Department of Labor’s YouthBuild grant program.

“Every year, thousands of students in Connecticut choose to end their high school career before they receive their diploma,” said Dodd. “This not only puts them at an educational disadvantage but also hurts their chances of having a good job in the future. The YouthBuild program will give these at-risk youth the opportunity to obtain their high school degree and will also boost their future employment prospects. This is a great example of the kind of business-government partnership that has and will continue to help spur economic growth in Connecticut.”

The YouthBuild program helps out-of-school youth by providing funds to enable them to obtain their high school diploma or GED while simultaneously training for jobs in the construction industry. Program participants also take part in community service while building and renovating affordable housing within their communities and learning eco-friendly building techniques.
