WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) announced today that Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative in Norwich will receive $9,188,050 as part of a national investment in Smart Grid modernization. The funds are being made available from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“Smart Grid technology will not only save energy, but also help Connecticut families save money on their energy bills,” said Dodd. “The use of smart grid technology will further establish Connecticut’s role as a leader in energy conservation. Green technologies such as Smart Grid will make our state’s energy infrastructure more efficient.”
The funds will be used to build a regional smart meter network infrastructure that will allow customers to manage and control electricity usage and costs. The infrastructure will include five municipal utilities and at least 13,000 meters.
The funds come as part of a $3.4 billion Recovery investment in Smart Grid technology nationally. It is estimated that implementation of smart grid technologies could reduce electricity use by more than four percent by 2030, saving businesses and consumers $20.4 billion.
