In the wake of the catastrophic oil spill polluting the wildlife environment of the Gulf Coast, Westy Self Storage initiates local response efforts by hosting a donation drive to collect the much needed items to assist with cleanup. Westy Self Storage in Stamford is a designated drop off location for donations.

All 16 Westy locations in the tri-state area are accepting donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide temporary storage for the collected items. The New Jersey Warehousemen and Movers Association has volunteered to transport the donated materials to The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary who will coordinate the distribution of the items along the affected coastal areas. The 38 year old non-profit Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary is the largest wild bird hospital and bird sanctuary in the US. They are dedicated to the rescue, repair and rehabilitation of injured birds and then their release into nature.

Today marks day 64 of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with the April 20 explosion and fire on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon. The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well. As of current, the well gushed between 66 million and 120 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, based on government daily spill rate figures.

Westy Self Storage, together with New Jersey Warehousemen and Movers Association, will be collecting towels, bottled water, powder detergent, paper towels, toilet paper and heavy duty trash bags. Please join the effort as your donation will help accelerate coastal cleanup and bird rescue by outfitting triage units along the affected areas of the Gulf Coast. Please help assist by contributing at Westy Self Storage in Stamford located at 80 Brownhouse Road. “We are grateful to Westy Self Storage and the New Jersey Warehousemen and Movers Association for their assistance in our time of need,” said Michelle Simoneau of The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. “It is refreshing to receive support from others, especially those not geographically near.”

Westy is open for drop off 7 days a week. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Call 203-961-8000 or visit www.westy.com for directions. “As the situation progresses, it has become quite apparent that the residual effects can be devastating,” said Joe Schweyer, District Director of Westy Self Storage, Stamford. “Together with The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, I am confident we can make a difference. Even the smallest of donations will go a long way in helping to rescue and rehabilitate wild life as well as coastal cleanup.”
