Steven Alexis Garcia shows his appreciation for the baby shower hosted by the Weston Women’s League as he sits in his mother Rosa’s lap.
The Weston Women’s League hosted a unique baby shower recently – instead of one expectant mom, 30 mothers were there, some still pregnant and others with their newborn babies, and they received advice along with gifts to give their children a better start in life.

The Weston Women’s League raised money to purchase diapers and other necessities at its annual Kidstock concert and received a generous donation of new infant clothes for each mother from Carter’s, Inc. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. donated “onesies” that the mothers decorated with colorful stencil drawings for their babies. Several volunteers planned a luncheon, with food donated by Whole Foods Market in Norwalk.

Heather Pemberton Levy, Philanthropy Chair of the Weston Women’s League, developed the idea of the baby shower and has coordinated the event for the past three years. She explained, “We were searching for a way to help mothers in need in the community and worked with FCA to develop the idea for the baby shower. Our volunteers love working on the event because it really touches people’s lives.”

An important part of the celebration was a presentation by Pam Bates, Immunization Action Plan Coordinator at the Norwalk Health Department. After explaining the importance of immunizations, she talked about how the mothers could keep track of their babies’ shots and make sure that they were up to date.

Ligia Masilamani, Director of Prevention Programs at the Agency, will work with the mothers to set up a system for monitoring their children’s immunizations. Ms. Masilamani thanked the speaker and the women who organized the lunch, saying, “It’s wonderful to see such strong community support for these women who are trying to provide for their children. We really appreciate all of the work that the Weston Women’s League puts into this event.”
