The Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk, Inc. (JLSN) begins its Fall 2010 Provisional Class for women interested in becoming members of this internationally recognized, non-profit, women’s volunteer organization on September 15th at its headquarters at 748 Post Road in Darien.

Since 1923, JLSN has responded continually to community needs in Stamford, Norwalk, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Weston, Westport and Ridgefield. JLSN has founded, or has participated in the establishment of, more than 80 community agencies. Some of these organizations are the Fairfield County Women’s Center at Norwalk Community College, Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk, Domestic Violence Services, Shelter for the Homeless (Pacific House), the Volunteer Center of Southwestern Fairfield County, Weir Farm Docent Program and the Women’s Crisis Center.

JLSN is one of 292 member leagues of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) (www.ajli.org). Inspired by AJLI’s vision, “The Junior League: Women Around the World as Catalysts for Lasting Community Change,” JLSN’s current focus is on Building Healthy Families. Community programs include the JLSN Diaper Co-Op, Healthy Parents, Kids in the Kitchen and Done in a Day service initiatives, such as the Coastal Cleanups.

JLSN affords a multitude of opportunities for women to network personally and professionally. The organization trains its members to become effective community volunteers, advocates and leaders. JLSN members develop a wide variety of skills, including, but not limited to: team building, public speaking, and internet proficiency in addition to serving the community. These valuable skills also translate well in the workplace and on a resume.

Members reside in all towns in the JLSN service area, and no sponsors are required. Women new to JLSN participate in a provisional class that serves as an introduction to the organization and its community efforts.

“Membership in the Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk provides a rewarding experience for our new members because they cultivate relationships within the community and with each other,” said Angelica Oxford, JLSN President. “Joining the Fall 2010 Provisional Class will help newcomers to the area and those who have been here a while a chance to learn about important issues facing our towns while getting to know other energetic and community-minded women.”

The Fall 2010 Provisional Class will meet from 7–9 p.m. on the following evenings:

· September 15th (Wednesday)
· September 30th (Thursday)
· October 13th (Wednesday)
· October 25th (Monday)
· November 10th (Wednesday)

Women interested in joining JLSN can contact the League office in Darien by calling (203) 655-4662, emailing membership@jlsn.org or visiting the website at www.jlsn.org.

The Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk, Inc. (JLSN) is a not-for-profit organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. JLSN has more than 400 active and sustaining members, all committed to building better communities. All women age 21 and older, of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism, are welcomed by JLSN.
