The governor's decision comes less than a week after the Election Day 2009, which ended this year's municipal campaigns, and only days after former U.S. Senate hopeful Ned Lamont announced that he will bid for the governor's seat. “I would like to share with you the news that – after much soul-searching and discussion with my family – I have decided not to seek re-election next year," said Govenor Rell in a statement. “The past five years I have had the honor – the incredible honor – to serve as the 87th Governor of Connecticut," continued Govenor Rell. Minutes after Governor Rell's announcement, Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, who is currenty exploring a run for Governor, issued the following statement: “I thank the Governor for her years of public service to the State of Connecticut, and I wish her and her family all the best," said Mayor Malloy. “We now know that Connecticut will have a new Governor in January of 2011. From my travels around the state, it’s clear that people want a leader with a track record of creating jobs, lowering crime, building affordable housing and improving quality of life for Connecticut families. I’ve spent 14 years as Mayor of Stamford doing precisely that, and should I become the next Governor I’d be proud to lead the fight to restore Connecticut’s economy and help put our state back on track,” said Mayor Malloy, whose term as a Mayor of Stamford will come to an end later this years. Malloy opted not to run for another term after 14 years at the helm of the City of Stamford. While many Democrats have already entered the field to run for the top seat in Hartford, most Republican hopefuls have been waiting to hear Rell's decision. One of the more anticipated announcements on the Republican side could come from current Lt.
