The American Red Cross is mounting a massive relief response to Storm Sandy and Big Y World Class Market is doing its part to send help and hope to those in need.

From Friday, November 2, to Saturday, November 17, Big Y customers and employees will have the opportunity to donate to American Red Cross Disaster Relief at all Big Y locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. The funds raised will support people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Thousands of people have spent the night in hundreds of Red Cross shelters in 10 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico since the storm began its onslaught. The Red Cross has served more than one million meals and snacks and mobilized more than 5,600 disaster workers and its entire fleet emergency response vehicles to support delivery of relief items.

“The response to Sandy is likely to be the biggest Red Cross response in the U.S. in the past five years,” said American Red Cross spokesperson Paul Shipman. “The Red Cross needs help now. We ask everyone to support us as we help people recover from this massive storm.”

Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need. Past initiatives include campaigns to support both international and domestic disasters such as the 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina. Following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Big Y collected donations from customers and employees resulting in a donation of $108,277.32 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund – Haiti Relief and Development. After the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, Big Y presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $100,000. When devastation hit right in our own back yard in 2011, Big Y, its customers and employees donated $141,000 to Red Cross tornado relief.
