The program at the Opening Night Concert and Reception on October 29 includes Beethoven String Quartet in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4; Anna Weesner “The Space Between” for string quartet; and Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115. Praised as “insightful and vibrant” (The New York Times) and “one of the freshest and most exciting” (The New Yorker), the Daedalus Quartet returns to Treetops CMS for a second collaboration with Artistic Director Oskar Espina Ruiz, clarinet. “Mr. Espina Ruiz is a phenomenal clarinetist, a subtle and discreet virtuoso whose dynamic control matched that of the string quartet.” (CVNC). The recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2008 “Academy Award” from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Anna Weesner’s The Space Between for string quartet is the discovery work in the program.
After this fall concert, the remaining three concerts of the season are scheduled in the spring: the Heath String Quartet, from London, performs Haydn, Widmann and Tchaikovsky on March 25; Musicians From Ravinia perform Mendelssohn and Beethoven on April 22; and the Cassatt String Quartet performs Borodin, Shostakovich and Beethoven on May 20 in honor of their long-time mentor, Paul Brunner.
In addition to its season concerts, Treetops CMS is expanding its music education and mentorship program, Artists Mentor Youth, to continue to bring the top talent from across the country to play for and work with underserved children in Fairfield County. This past season, the Argus String Quartet, which performed at the Waterside School and InTake Music in Stamford for this program, went on to winning the gold medal at the M-Prize Competition in Michigan and got Juilliard School’s highly coveted graduate-string-quartet-in-residence position. Artists Mentor Youth is supported by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation and a Community Arts Partnership Program grant from the City of Stamford.
The Opening Night Concert and Reception is on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at 4:00 pm at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, Waveny Park, 681 South Avenue, New Canaan, Conn.
Tickets are available online at treetopscms.org and at the box office at 203-539-0220. Tickets for this concert cost $35 for adults, $15 for 16-39 year-olds, and $5 for children (ages 5 to 15); discounts are available to subscribers.
