UConn Spring Break: Students serving the nation and learning outside of the classroom
This week, 141 University of Connecticut (UConn) students and 12 staff members are off campus on service trips to eight different areas around the US. These students are all involved in Alternative Break programs with the Office of Community Outreach (CO). These programs are designed to prepare students to successfully serve their communities throughout college and beyond. Students are participating in weeklong service-learning projects in Beards Fork, West Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; New Orleans; Hartford; New York City; Pine Ridge, South Dakota; and Spotsylvania, Virginia. Governor Rell establishes citizens’ education commission to help close achievement gap
Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that Connecticut children have another strong advocate in their corner for quality public education with the establishment of the Connecticut Commission on Educational Achievement. The volunteer and privately funded commission, which is composed primarily of business leaders and includes several other professionals, was established by Governor Rell through Executive Order No. 40. The group will research why Connecticut has one of the largest achievement gaps between low-income students and their more affluent peers, and make recommendations to the Governor, lawmakers, relevant state and local institutions and the public on how to close it. Stepping Stones Conservation QuestSM Mini Exhibit kicks off statewide school tour at Rogers International School

Conservation QuestSM delivers important energy conservation messages, inspiring children to make thoughtful choices about energy use to help protect the planet and promote healthy living. The Conservation Quest SM Mini Exhibit will travel to schools throughout the state free of charge after its stay at Rogers.

Students at Rogers International School in Stamford were the first children in the state to join the quest to conserve energy with the help of Stepping Stones Museum for Children. The museum’s Conservation QuestSM Mini Exhibit made its debut at Rogers this week. Dodd meets with UConn President Hogan

Fifth graders name which person in Connecticut history they admire most
Surrounded by fifth graders, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz today presented awards to the winners of the Secretary of the State’s 16th Annual Essay Contest. More than 1,000 fifth graders from across Connecticut submitted essays this year. Students were asked to write about which person in Connecticut history they admired the most and why. Five winning essays were selected from each of Connecticut’s five congressional districts. More
